Our Journey: From Tropical Island to the United Kingdom
We began our beekeeping journey on the island of Trinidad and Tobago, where I practiced beekeeping for over 13 years. With many harvests I have discovered many wonderful and different flavours and tastes. Over the years I have relocated my apiary multiple times across the island, lost many bees and hives but gained so much more experience, knowledge and appreciation. The seasons are different in Trinidad than they are in the United Kingdom, so it has required quite a bit of adjustment, but nothing out of the ordinary.
The flora and fauna of Trinidad and Tobago and the honey that I have produced from the flora and fauna surrounding my apiary has varied over the years from citrus, fruity tastes to oak, woody flavours. It all depending on the trees and flowers that were flowering at the time.
The species of bees is very different in Trinidad than those in the United Kingdom, their temperament are more aggressive. But that did not stop me from learning how to adapt and learn the characteristics and temperament of European Bees.
In 2023 I moved to the United Kingdom and in 2024 I was offered the opportunity to start an apiary. It was a huge adjustment and yes, I had to start from the beginning again, but it is nothing that I haven’t done before. These obstacles only make the business and the hives stronger and in the long run myself stronger. We face them, we adapt and we conquer. Since beginning my apiary on the Isle of Wight in the United Kingdom I have been pursuing my Beekeeping Masters from the University of Cornell. I have learnt a great amount of knowledge that I am practising in my own apiary on a regular basis and take every opportunity to inform and teach others about the importance and greatness of beekeeping.
We are very excited at Geve’s Bees for the opportunities here in the United Kingdom and the future for Geve’s Bees. We are looking forward to many more harvests and the products that we can and will produce.
